British Marine set to advise government on the creation of a new marine flare disposal network

Published on: 14 October 2021

The UK government has now published its response to the consultation on the future disposal of pleasure vessel marine flares.

With the listening exercise now concluded, the government plans to set up a working group with key industry partners, including British Marine, to design and introduce a national network of local disposal schemes. It is hoped that the network, once established, will offer an accessible and reliable route for boat owners to dispose of pyrotechnics.

The local networks will replace the Maritime and Coastguard Agency'svoluntary public-facing service, eventually becoming the sole route for future arrangements.

British Marine will be working with the government and other stakeholders over the coming months to discuss how the schemes will be funded, how best to build public awareness and the environmental challenges associated with the improper disposal of flares.
