FWFD tallies record number of grass fires on holiday

Published on July 06, 2022

In the 24 hours of July 4, the Fort Worth Fire Department responded to 203 grass fires, a 1,000% increase from each of the previous two years.

The daily average of runs for the department is about 400 total calls. This Fourth of July, the department responded to 1,155 total calls, which is a 125% increase from both of the previous two years.

At one point, between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m., FWFD was dispatched to 77 grass fires. The calls for help were nonstop.

The last time the department's Alarm Office experienced that many emergency calls for service was during the February 2021 winter storm. As the department experienced then, the logistics and manpower that went into ensuring needed resources were available to extinguish fires across the city, in addition to responding to typical daily calls, was the product of training, experience and the drive to help Fort Worth residents.

The FWFD thanked everyone who reached out with support, encouragement and concerns for firefighters' safety and well-being.
