Compassionate care honored with DAISY and BEE Awards

Spectrum Health United Hospital caregivers recognized.

GREENVILLE, Mich., May 11, 2022 - Tears, hugs and flowers highlighted a Nurses Week DAISY and BEE Award ceremony Tuesday as two Spectrum Health United Hospital caregivers were recognized for their nursing excellence and compassionate care.

Sandra Campbell, RN, who works in the emergency department, was honored with a DAISY Award after being nominated by a recent patient for the physical and emotional care she received after being a victim of domestic assault.

"It had been drilled into my head by my partner that it was my fault, and I was the problem," the nomination read. "Sandra not only went above and beyond doing her job, but she took the time out of her night to come sit with me. She reminded me of my worth and that none of what happened to me was my fault. At this time, I was beyond terrified, and Sandra made me feel so incredibly safe. Not only is she an outstanding nurse, but she is also an incredible human and Spectrum Health is so lucky to have her."

The patient surprised Campbell by being present during the ceremony.

Cathy Thurston, activities director of the United Hospital Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (RNC) was given a BEE Award for supporting residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thurston, who has been activities director at the United Hospital RNC for 31 years, was given the award by RNC administrator Shelly Parker.

"During covid when we were not able to have a stylist come in to provide salon services, Cathy learned to cut hair and provide salon services to the residents every week," Parker said. "She has always worked hard to be creative in planning activities and events for our residents that focus on having fun," Parker said. "Critical staffing has been a challenge in the area of activities, but Cathy never thinks twice about being available and covers the open holes in the schedule to make sure the activities still happen for the residents."

Campbell and Thurston received flowers, commemorative pins and plaques during the ceremony.

The DAISY award program was adopted from The DAISY Award, an international program established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. The Barnes family was deeply appreciative of the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created an award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.

United and Kelsey Hospitals have expanded the recognition program to include the BEE award, open to all clinical and non-clinical employees, in addition to nurses.

Nominations are open for any Spectrum Health employee who regularly goes above and beyond in creating a meaningful experience for patients. The awards are given based on nominations from patients, community members and colleagues.
