JOINT RELEASE SET News 65/2021 September 2, 2021 SET, Sahapat, Wat Chak Daeng, jointly expand Care the Whale project's 'Zero Waste' campaign to communities in areas dubbed Bangkok's green lung BANGKOK, September 2, 2021 - The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), together with Wat Chak Daeng and Saha Pathanapibul pcl (SPC), has expanded the ongoing 'Care the Whale' project to another vibrant community for environmental sustainability. The team initiated the 'Zero Waste Station @Bang Kachao River Bend' campaign, reaching out to over 40,000 residents of 13,200 families in six sub-districts namely Bang Kachao, Bang Ko Bua, Bang Nam Phueng, Bang Krasop, Bang Yo and Song Khanong in Samut Prakan province, east of Bangkok. Through involvement and empowerment, the community dwellers are invited to join the campaign based on the systematic waste management by simply turning the used items and recyclable garbage to the accumulated points and then redeeming for various consumer products. The collected garbage will be recycled or upcycled and finally turned into new items for the benefit of the communities. The campaign's goal is to reduce global warming and develop mechanism to ease the cost of living of the residents during the COVID-19 crisis. The abbot of Wat Chak Daeng Phra Methee Wachirasophon (Pranom Thammalangkaro) said that the temple started internal environmental conservation campaigns in 2005 and then has expanded outside to nearby communities which was well-received by the public and private sectors. Today, the temple is the center of waste management for the communities situated along this bend of the Chao Phraya River. In addition, this is also a learning center and innovative model for other communities. The 'Zero Waste Station @Bang Kachao River Bend' campaign will be another model to promote balanced environment. The temple area is be used as a station where the residents can redeem their garbage for consumer products and the wastes will be turned into various products such as tables, chairs, construction blocks and fuel, etc. which will benefit the communities in return. SET President Pakorn Peetathawatchai said that the 'Zero Waste' campaign is part of the 'Care the Whale' project created in line with SET's vision 'To Make the Capital Market Work for Everyone'. SET has collaborated with partners in public, private and social sectors to promote environmental sustainability. This year, Care the Whale expanded from the first site launched along Ratchadaphisek road to other communities. SET has initiated the 'Zero Waste Station @Bang Kachao River Bend' campaign, aiming at promoting sustainable environmental management via circular economy process. The Zero Waste station has been designed and set up to receive sorted garbage from communities consisting of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic bottles, polypropylene (PP) food bags and used clothes. Residents can join the campaign by collecting these items and accumulating points to redeem quality consumer products from SPC with awareness that the garbage should be properly disposed of and it actually has value. The 'Zero Waste' idea is materialized since the collected garbage is actually recycled and upcycled into various new products back to the communities and society. Significantly, SET has provided the Climate Care Platform to manage the campaign's garbage database and to calculate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. 'The Zero Waste Station @Bang Kachao River Bend' campaign aims at collecting garbage for recycling at the amount of about 20 percent of the total waste in the Bang Kachao river bend of about 4,000 kilograms a month. Furthermore, this campaign is also instrumental in easing the cost of living burden of community dwellers during the COVID-19 crisis,' Pakorn added. SPC Vice Chair of the Executive Board Pasook Raksawonkse said the company is determined to lead on demand response matters and consumer's quality of life improvement. Environmental stewardship is an issue that the company has continuously placed importance on and embedded into business operations. SPC continuously focuses on building awareness in environmental management among the company's employees and communities outside the organization, cultivating waste sorting behavior among the youth so that schools and households know how to properly manage waste recycling or waste deposition. The cooperation with Wat Chak Daeng and SET in the Zero Waste Station @Bang Kachao River Bend campaign is in line with SPC's objective to promote sustainable development in social and environmental dimensions. By providing quality consumer goods for redemption, the company truly wants to play a part in helping communities and making essential consumer products available to community residents to reduce their cost of living amid the COVID-19 situation. SET jointly with over 40 partners launched the Care the Whale 'Zero Waste' project in communities on Ratchadaphisek road in late 2019 and then expanded the project to other areas around Bangkok, enabling greenhouse gas emissions reduction via garbage management and sorting of about 10,218 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents or equaling carbon sequestration per year by 1.14 million large trees. Together with alliances, SET is committed to helping solving environmental problems, building balanced ecosystem toward sustainable solutions to global warming, in accordance with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) #13: 'Climate Action'; #12: 'Responsible Consumption and Production'; and #17: 'Partnerships for the Goals'.
