Don't want surgery? Medical weight loss could be better option for you

If you are committed to losing weight, but don't qualify for or want surgery, there are plenty of alternatives to weight loss surgery.

Bariatric surgery, while a great option for certain individuals, isn't the best choice for everyone. In fact, nonsurgical weight loss options are often a better fit for many of our patients.

If you are actively receiving cancer treatment, are pregnant, have an underlying psychological disorder, or have severe heart failure, you may want to consider an alternative to bariatric surgery. But even if you don't have a pre-existing health condition, a medically guided weight loss program can help you meet your weight loss goals safely and effectively.

Main Line Health's nonsurgical weight loss programs are proven treatments for obesity and can help you prevent harmful health conditions (like coronary heart diseaseand cancer) from developing down the road and alleviate a handful of diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and sleep apnea.

Reasons to ditch DIY weight loss

A do-it-yourself or fad diet can only get you so far. In fact, 90 percent of DIY diets end in failure. Most of the time, weight loss from dieting is short-term; dieters often gain the pounds back and fall into a dangerous cycle of yo-yo dieting.

At Main Line Health, our bariatric dietitians and medical professionals are trained to teach patients the fundamentals of healthy eating to promote long-term and permanent weight loss, according to Stacey Weatherbee, a bariatric dietician at Main Line Health's bariatric center.

By working one-on-one with each patient, Main Line Health is able to offer more support and accountability than a DIY plan. "My favorite quote is 'healthy eating is not a diet.' I truly believe that we help patients see the bigger picture of nutrition and how it can fit into their lifestyle," Weatherbee says.

How medical weight loss options work

Our team of registered dietitians, psychologists, and exercise physiologists will work with you to map out a medically managed weight loss programto successfully meet your lifestyle and wellness goals.

We'll look at everything-including your eating habits, medical history, and of course, your own personal wishes-to determine if you will benefit from a meal replacement program, individualized meal planning sessions with our bariatric dietitians, or prescription weight-loss medications.

On top of that, patients will be invited to Main Line Health's nutritional lecture series, receive coaching with an exercise physiologist, and have access to fitness testing and emotional wellness counseling services, explains Dr. Stephanie McKnight, a nonsurgical bariatrician at Main Line Health's bariatric center.

"Our medical weight loss service is comprehensive-we look at an individual's weight management journey from not just the food perspective but the emotional and physical side as well," McKnight says.

From there, our team will teach you new weight management skills and offer continued support and personalized exercise and meal plans to prevent weight regain.

"The Main Line Health Comprehensive Weight and Wellness Program is a team affair," McKnight adds. "The patient is the team captain and we are the coaches."

Remember: When it comes to weight loss, you have options. There is no one-size-fits-all procedure, which is why Main Line Health is committed to understanding what you need to succeed at losing weight and reclaiming your health.
