Red Line station closure this weekend to prepare for summer construction

For immediate release: May 15, 2024

This weekend, May 18-19, Metro will close the Brookland-CUA Station, with no Red Line service at Fort Totten. Free shuttle buses will connect the closed stations between Takoma and Rhode Island Avenue. The closure will allow Metro to perform work in preparation for the three-month closure on the Red Line this summer.

Green Line service will continue to be available at Fort Totten, providing an alternative rail option for customers. Anyone not traveling to/from the affected Red Line stations - Brookland-CUA or Fort Totten - should consider using the Green Line between Fort Totten and Gallery Place for connections to downtown DC and the Red Line.

Over the weekend on the Red Line, Metro will replace ties which support the tracks and prepare for the summer shutdown. That involves replacing the gears on the switches which allow trains to cross from one track to another, removing vegetation that could impede train service, and installing fiber-optic cables that aid in two-way communications for customers and the Metro Transit Police Department.

Additional work is also planned on the southern end of the Green Line with single tracking between Naylor Road and Branch Avenue. New rail ties will be installed along the above ground tracks and new concrete grout pads to support tracks in tunnel sections, deck waterproofing, and remove overgrown vegetation.

The Blue, Orange, Silver, and Yellow lines will operate normal service.
