On June 30, 2022, Partner Matthew Caligur was quoted in a Compliance Week article, "Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act should prompt due diligence reassessment." Adopted June 21, the law bans goods from the Uyghur Autonomous Region of China (Xinjiang), presuming they are made with forced labor. An importer must provide clear and convincing evidence to U.S. Customs and Border Protection to rebut that presumption. Caligur said importers should update risk assessment regularly, be prepared for increased compliance costs and consider alternative sourcing.
