The City of Seattle has received additional Federal resources for West Seattle Bridge repair!

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has selected the West Seattle Bridge project to receive $12 million from a competitive statewide federal grant program for local bridges. The City has now secured Federal funding for 70% of work and remains on schedule to reopen bridge in mid-2022!

Building on the recently announced Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) grant, this now brings the total federal funding committed to this project to $37.7 million of an estimated $54.8 million for construction costs. We continue to meet key milestones which keep the West Seattle High-Rise Bridge repair process on schedule, and this funding further supports timely repair and reopening in 2022. The City will keep advocating for local, state, and federal funds for construction and maintenance of the West Seattle Bridge as well as traffic and safety improvements throughout the surrounding impacted communities including West Seattle, South Park, Highland Park, and Georgetown.

Mayor Jenny A. Durkan met last week with U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Pete Buttigieg in addition to Senator Maria Cantwell and Deputy Secretary of Transportation Polly Trottenberg to reiterate the importance of ensuring that we can reach all key milestones for this project. City officials also expressed gratitude to local partners at WSDOT and Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC) for recognizing the importance of restoring travel on this crucial regional corridor.

'We are grateful to our federal partners including Senator Maria Cantwell, Secretary Buttigieg, and our entire congressional delegation who continue to prioritize this important infrastructure project. This is an all hands on deck approach by our colleagues at every level of government to address the most significant transportation challenge that has faced our city. We have an aggressive timeline to re-establish mobility for West Seattle and across the region. Our crews are working tirelessly each day to repair and reopen the West Seattle High-Rise Bridge as well as mitigate the impact to communities in the Duwamish Valley and West Seattle.'

As we continue to pursue funding partnerships critical to getting the bridge open, the additional commitment of Federal funds is vital to maintaining our schedule.'

Earlier this month, the West Seattle Bridge project received another federal grant of $11.3 million through the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) discretionary grant program.

The program funds transportation projects of national and regional significance in line with the Biden Administration's principles for national infrastructure projects that result in good-paying jobs, improve safety, apply transformative technology, and explicitly address climate change and racial equity.

The West Seattle Bridge has also previously received $7.5 million in federal funding through the Highway Infrastructure Program (HIP) and $6.9 million from the Surface Transportation Program (STP) allocated through the Puget Sound Regional Council (PSRC).
