Working Globally to Combat the Climate Crisis

Attending COP26 in Glasgow
This week, I led a Congressional delegation to Glasgow to meet with global leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), where we conveyed the strong commitment of the U.S. Congress in addressing the climate crisis. Through bilateral meetings, panel discussions and other engagements, the House delegation worked to advance top climate priorities, including the recent IPCC climate report, gender equity and public-private sector coordination on climate action.

The climate crisis is the existential threat of our time - and our future depends on taking climate action now. That is why House Democrats are advancing the most ambitious and consequential climate and clean energy legislation of all time with the Build Back Better Act. Alongside the Bipartisan Infrastructure package, which the House passed last week, this legislation delivers the most significant climate action in history, with a nearly trillion dollar investment that recognizes the interconnectedness of climate change and issues including gender justice, the economy and national security.

The devastating impacts of climate change are already hurting Americans, with disproportionate impacts on vulnerable communities that have historically been left behind. Here in California, we have seen devastating wildfires, severe droughts and record-high temperatures. As we face Code Red for Humanity, America and the world must meet this moment by addressing this crisis, putting justice and equity first.

Historic Investments in Our Nation's Infrastructure
Friday night, the House passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill - a once-in-a-century investment in rebuilding our nation's infrastructure! This historic bill now goes to President Biden's desk to be signed into law.

Our nation's crumbling and outdated infrastructure weakens our economy, hurts families and causes added costs and delays for American businesses bringing their goods to market. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill will:

  • Create millions of jobs over the course of the decade;
  • Rebuild roads and bridges nationwide, including the largest bridge investment since the construction of the interstate highway system seven decades ago;
  • Deliver clean drinking water to ten million families and more than 400,000 schools and child care facilities nationwide with the largest-ever investment in American water infrastructure to replace lead pipes and service lines across the nation;
  • Help clean up legacy pollution, which is an important step in advancing environmental justice;
  • Expand access to reliable high-speed internet to help more families get online to work and learn;
  • Make historic improvements to public transit, with the largest federal investment in American history and the largest federal investment in passenger rail since the creation of Amtrak; and
  • Support action to address the climate crisis, making down-payments on clean energy transmission, a clean and resilient electric grid, electric vehicle infrastructure and more.

Our crumbling and decaying infrastructure has long weakened our economy, hurt families and added costs and delays for American businesses. With this bill, House Democrats are creating good-paying jobs, investing in a foundation for strong economic growth and ensuring all communities can compete and succeed in the 21st Century.

Finding the Truth Behind the January 6th Attack
The violent domestic attack on Congress on January 6th was an attempt to overthrow the government and to subvert American Democracy itself. The Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the Capitol is honoring its duty to pursue the truth of that dark day and to ensure that such an assault on Democracy can never again happen.

This week, a federal Court Judge has delivered an important victory for the Constitution, the rule of law and the American people, in ruling to reject the past President's attempted delay and obstruction of the investigation into the deadly January 6th insurrection. This ruling clearly reaffirms the power and importance of the Select Committee to pursue its prerogative to conduct oversight and find the truth, to protect the Capitol and defend Democracy. No one can be allowed to stand in the way of the truth - particularly not the previous President, who instigated and encouraged the insurrection.

Unity and Patriotism
Since our earliest days, and in our darkest hours, generations of patriots have proudly stepped forward to defend our nation. On Veterans Day, Americans come together in gratitude and draw strength from the patriotism of our veterans and men and women in uniform. Respecting the veteran community is a unifying force in our nation, as we strive to live up to our promise to leave no veteran behind. As our nation Builds Back Better in the months ahead, Democrats will not rest until all those who have fought for our freedom can enjoy the benefits they have earned and the future they deserve.

Keeping Ahead of COVID in San Francisco

The FDA has authorized the use of the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11, and all vaccine sites in San Francisco will be able to administer vaccines for these children. San Francisco Unified School District has partnered with the San Francisco Department of Health to host vaccination clinics at SFUSD schools to make vaccines free and accessible to families:

  • Tuesdays from 3:30-6:30 at Malcolm X Academy
  • Wednesdays from 2:30-5:30 at Balboa High School
  • Saturdays from 10:30-1:30 at McCoppin Elementary School
  • Sundays from 10:30-1:30 at Sunset Elementary School

Eligible populations are authorized to receive a single booster dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine. In a statement by the California Department of Health, Californians 18 and older are eligible for the single booster dose if 6 months have passed since their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine or if 2 months have passed since their Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Find out where your local free vaccination sites are here. The San Francisco Department of Public Health has recommended that residents ages 65 and over schedule their COVID-19 booster shots in advance of the busy holiday season to reduce the risk of hospitalization. Also, flu season is here. The San Francisco Department of Public Health strongly recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older get a flu vaccine to safeguard their health, with the start of a flu season that overlaps with COVID-19 this year.
