DOJ secures guilty plea for violent gun offender in cold case murder

A Wilmington man has pled guilty to charges stemming from the 2018 murder of Richard Young. On April 22, 24-year-old Nasir Anderson pled guilty to Murder Second Degree, Possession of a Firearm During Commission of a Felony, Robbery First Degree and Conspiracy Second Degree in New Castle County Superior Court. The plea follows a six-year investigation into his involvement in the 2018 home invasion, and subsequent murder of Richard Young in the 2300 block of Market Street Wilmington, DE.

"This is a just result on a years-old, heinous murder," said Attorney General Kathy Jennings. "Both our prosecutors and the Wilmington Police refused to give up, and after years of single-minded dedication, we are bringing justice for the deceased and his family. On to the sentencing."

"This guilty plea is the result of an investigation that was continued by members of our Cold Case Unit, and I appreciate the work they do to help bring justice - and hopefully some degree of closure - to the family members of murder victims," said Chief Wilfredo Campos.

On February 25, 2018, Anderson and an accomplice entered Young's apartment, armed with handguns and black ski masks, intending to rob him. During the course of the robbery, Young was shot multiple times and later died from his wounds. Wilmington Police investigated the crime and continued the investigation as years passed and the case went cold. The WPD Cold Case Unit led the follow-up investigation in 2023, leading to the identification of Nasir Anderson as a suspect in the crime. The second suspect in this case has been identified as a person who was killed in July 2018.

Anderson was indicted in February 2023. A Pre-Sentence Investigation has been ordered and sentencing is currently scheduled for June 28, 2024.
