***UPDATE*** Metro Division - Homicide in the 1500 block of Catherine Simmons Ave

Case Update: Thursday, June 6, 2019

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit have charged Natron McDougald, DOB: 08/30/1994, for his involvement in the murder of Monica Smith.

As a result of continued investigation into this case, McDougald was identified as a suspect. On June 5, 2019, members of the CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) located and arrested McDougald. McDougald was interviewed by Homicide Unit detectives and subsequently transported to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with murder.

This is an active and ongoing investigation. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Office.

The victim in this case has been identified as Monica Kathleen Smith, DOB: 08/15/1992.

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 1500 block of Catherine Simmons Avenue in the Metro Division. The call for service came in at 7:27p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2019.

Metro Division patrol officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call for service. Upon arrival, officers located a female with an apparent gunshot wound located inside the apartment. Medic transported the victim to the hospital where she was pronounced deceased. Her name will be released once her family has been notified.

Homicide Detectives are currently canvassing the area to determine whether there are any additional witnesses to this incident.

Crime Scene Search responded to the call for service to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives of the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Homicide Prosecution Team, Victim Services, CFD, Medic and Operations Command responded to the scene.
