Whitbourne RCMP arrests man for a number of firearm and criminal offences

Following an investigation conducted by Whitbourne RCMP and other partner agencies, 55-year-old Charles Jackson was taken into custody on September 14, 2022, for a number of criminal charges.

On August 23, 2022, police received a report indicating that Jackson was in possession of a hand gun and was believed to be traveling to Alberta with intentions to harm a number of individuals. An operational safety plan was put into action to protect those involved which engaged multi-jurisdictional partnerships with other police forces, including the Wood Buffalo RCMP Detachment, as well as transportation agencies.

RCMP NL officers from the Criminal Intelligence Section and General Investigation Section were engaged in the investigation. A tracking warrant for Jackson was sought and authorized by Harbour Grace Provincial Court and a public safety warrant was executed on his Cavendish residence. Inside, seven firearms, including the described handgun, and ammunition were located and seized.

Over the next number of days, Whitbourne RCMP conducted extensive patrols, door knocks and neighborhood inquiries in an attempt to locate Jackson while police agencies in Alberta completed the same.

On September 14, 2022, as a result of the extensive police patrols, Jackson turned himself in at the Whitbourne RCMP Detachment. He attended court yesterday and was remanded to appear again today.

Jackson is charged with the following criminal offences:

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Uttering threats against a person - two counts
  • Failing to comply with conditions of a release order

RCMP NL continues to fulfill its mandate to protect public safety, enforce the law, and ensure the delivery of priority policing services in Newfoundland and Labrador.
