Urban Forest Activities

Grid 1 Tree Trimming

The City's contracted trimming company, West Coast Arborists (WCA), will be wrapping up pruning trees in Grid 1 in the next few weeks. This is the area from Harrison Avenue to the southern City boundary, between Indian Hill Boulevard and the westerly City boundary. This work began in early spring. WCA is currently working in the Wheeler Park area.

All City trees are pruned on a regular basis using only the highest professionally accepted standards, and in a manner that will encourage good development while preserving their health, structure, and natural appearance. During this time, traffic control will be in place and minor traffic delays may occur. Since this activity may result in some noise and extra traffic during this period, we ask for your patience and understanding.

Tree Removals

Along with tree trimming, West Coast Arborists is working on tree removals. City trees are removed if they are determined to be dead, diseased, or hazardous. WCA is also wrapping scheduled removal of trees in Grid 1. Trees that are scheduled for removal in this area will not be trimmed. Trees will be replaced as part of the annual reforestation program.

Stump Removals

WCA is also working through the City removing stumps of trees that fell during the windstorm that occurred in January. Stumps cannot be removed until the DigAlert process is complete to be sure underground utilities are not disturbed. DigAlert is evident by different color markings in the street and/or sidewalk adjacent to the stump. Stump removal will occur within 30-days of the completion of the DigAlert process.

Reforestation

The Community Services Department has concluded the City's annual reforestation program. New trees are planted between the months of October - April because the cooler weather gives the young trees the best chance of survival. All properties that had trees removed during the past year will automatically receive a letter for a replacement tree, including trees that fell during the windstorm. Reforestation letters are usually sent out in late summer/early fall. The letter will include a list of species to choose from. The City's Designated Street Tree List can be found here.
