Mexico reaffirms its support for Palestine to become a full member of the United Nations
  • The Permanent Representative of Mexico to the UN called for the immediate and definitive cessation of attacks against the civilian population and regretted the veto against Palestine's admission as a full member of the UN.

Mexico participated in the open debate of the United Nations Security Council on the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question, more than six months after the start of the escalated violence in the Gaza Strip by Hamas militants on October 7, 2023.

In his remarks, the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the UN, Héctor Vasconcelos y Cruz, called emphatically for the parties to cease hostilities definitively and permanently, especially the indiscriminate attacks against the civilian population and medical and humanitarian personnel.

He reaffirmed Mexico's support for a comprehensive and definitive two-State solution to the conflict that addresses Israel's legitimate security concerns and allows for a politically and economically viable Palestinian State, living side by side with Israel within secure and internationally recognized borders, in accordance with international law and the UN resolutions.

Permanent Representative Vasconcelos y Cruz reaffirmed Mexico's promotion of the peaceful settlement of disputes and, in view of the prolonged impasse in the peace process, support for Palestine's full membership of the UN. He regretted that the Security Council did not approve the draft resolution for Palestine's full membership in the UN on April 18 due to the U.S. veto.

Mexico has supported actions in several multilateral forums that have, among others, the legal effect of recognizing Palestine as a State. Mexico voted in favor of the November 29, 2012 General Assembly resolution 67/19 that admitted Palestine as a non-member observer state of the UN.
