A jury found a 38-year-old man guilty today for stealing a man's vehicle and then killing him by running him over in a parking garage, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced.
Deputy District Attorney Paul Przelomiec said Mitchell Ray Castillo of Los Angeles was found guilty of one count each of first-degree murder and carjacking.
Sentencing is scheduled for February 18 in Department 126 of the Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Castillo faces 60 years to life in state prison.
The defendant encountered victim Ricardo 'Rick' Mota on Dec. 11, 2017, in a parking garage near MacArthur Park, stole the victim's pickup truck and ran him over as he fled. Mota, 54, died as a result of his injuries, according to evidence presented at the seven-day long trial.
Officers with the Los Angeles Police Department, Valley Traffic Division, spotted Castillo in the stolen truck and arrested him within hours of the incident.
