Kustoff Votes Against Speaker Pelosi’s Partisan Police Reform Bill

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Representative David Kustoff (TN-08), issued the following statement following his vote against H.R. 1280 - George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. This legislation would ban federal no-knock drug warrants and require complaints against law enforcement officers to be made public, including those that are later found not to be credible. It also limits the ability of police departments to obtain additional resources from the federal government, which are used to help protect officers in life threatening situations. Lastly, it eliminates qualified immunity protections for officers that shields them for making reasonable mistakes in contentious situations.

'Speaker Pelosi had the opportunity today to make real change and work across the aisle with Republicans to deliver meaningful police reform. Instead, today's bill hurts our communities and prevents our brave law enforcement officers from safely and effectively doing their jobs,' said Rep. Kustoff. 'Not only does this partisan legislation do nothing to address the dismantling and defunding of police departments throughout the United States, but it also limits essential tools and resources for our officers. That is why I voted against this harmful legislation. I promise to always stand with and defend our law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to ensure the safety and security of our communities in West Tennessee and across the country.'
