Proclamation Spotlight's City's Commitment to Affordable Housing for Residents

Access to safe, stable affordable homes is critical to create strong, thriving, equitable communities. That's why during the month of May, the Santa Rosa City Council and the Santa Rosa Housing Authority are joining with community partners and experts in the field of housing locally and across the nation, in celebrating Affordable Housing Month and recommitting to the City's mission to promote awareness, fairness, inclusion, and justice in housing.

On May 7, 2024, Santa Rosa Mayor Natalie Rogers proclaimed the month of May to be Affordable Housing Month in the City of Santa Rosa:

WHEREAS; the City of Santa Rosa is committed to safe, stable, and affordable housing for all its residents; and

WHEREAS; in July 2023 the Housing Authority committed conditional loans to four Santa Rosa housing developments, Caritas Homes Phase 11, Laurel at Perennial Park Phase Ill, Burbank Avenue Apartments, and Vigil Light Senior Apartments. These loan commitments will assist in the development of 158 new affordable homes, including 30 units for seniors, 30 units for formerly homeless residents and rehabilitation of 49 affordable senior units; and

WHEREAS; in October 2023 the City launched the a Down Payment Assistance Loan Program and coordinated with Burbank Housing's CalHome Program to provide up to $2 million from Santa Rosa, in deferred payment loans to first time homebuyers in Santa Rosa; and

WHEREAS; the City's affordable housing loan portfolio has grown to $195 million with over 4,500 units monitored for compliance annually; and

WHEREAS; the Housing Authority administers over 2,012 Housing Choice Vouchers and has a waiting list of over 7,400 households; and

WHEREAS; Affordable Housing Month is a time to recommit to our mission to promote awareness, fairness, inclusion, and justice in housing.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that, I, Natalie Rogers, Mayor of the City of Santa Rosa, on behalf of the entire City Council, do hereby proclaim that the City of Santa Rosa proclaims the month of May 2024 to be: Affordable Housing Month and City Council supports citywide efforts in developing and sustaining affordable housing for the residents of Santa Rosa.

Pipeline of Affordable Housing Projects

The City's list of affordable housing projects currently in the pipeline tracks recently completed and pending projects in Santa Rosa, and includes the amount of local contribution and other funding sources to bring the projects to completion. Currently, the list includes 29 projects with a total of 1,318 affordable housing units which have been, or will soon be added to the city's affordable housing inventory. These new units will provide much-needed housing to Santa Rosans living on low incomes, including community members who are homeless, formerly homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, seniors and residents with special needs.
