Ronald L. Harter, M.D., FASA, elected First Vice President of the American Society of Anesthesiologists

SAN DIEGO- Ronald L. Harter, M.D., FASA, was today elected as first vice president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists(ASA), the nation's largest organization of physician anesthesiologists. Dr. Harter was elected by the House of Delegates at the ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2021 annual meetingand will serve for one year.

Dr. Harter is the Jay J. Jacoby professor and chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at The Ohio State University College of Medicinein Columbus, and is a practicing physician anesthesiologist at the University's Wexner Medical Center.

"I am honored to continue serving ASA and its members in this new role," said Dr. Harter. "I look forward to developing effective solutions to help address the significant challenges currently facing health care in our nation, most especially the delivery of anesthesia and perioperative care, critical care and pain medicine by our physician members, to ensure our specialty continues to be a model of safe patient care."

As first vice president, Dr. Harter will serve as a member of the ASA Executive Committee, which consists of the president, president-elect, first vice president and immediate past president. The Executive Committee expedites, executes and administers the policies adopted by the ASA House of Delegates and ASA Board of Directors.

Over the past three decades, Dr. Harter has served ASA in numerous roles, most recently as speaker of the ASA House of Delegates. He has also served as ASA's representative to the National Academy of Medicine's Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience. He has previously served as a member of the ASA Board of Directors and as chair of the ASA Ad Hoc Committee on Physician Well-Being, Young Physicians' Committee, Committee on Medical Students and Residents, and Committee on Bylaws. He has also been a member of several ASA committees, including the ASA Perioperative Surgical Home Steering Committee and Ad Hoc Committee on Perioperative Medicine.

Dr. Harter has been an active member of the Ohio Society of Anesthesiologists since 1994 and served as its president in the early 2000s.

Dr. Harter received a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Capital University in Ohio and completed his Doctor of Medicine at The Ohio State University. He completed his residency in anesthesiology at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, D.C. He is board-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

Dr. Harter lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wife Katharine; they have five children.
