NOPD Investigating Fatal Accident in First District

The NOPD is investigating a fatal accident hat occurred last night (April 16, 2024) in the First District.

At about 9:11 p.m., NOPD First District officers responded to a call of a vehicle hitting a pedestrian at Canal Street and South Claiborne Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers discovered an unknown, adult Black male lying in the intersection. EMS arrived and pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.

Through investigation, it was determined that a white Mercedes was traveling eastbound on South Claiborne Avenue. When the vehicle proceeded through the intersection at Canal Street, a pedestrian unexpectedly walked in front of the vehicle and was struck.

According to investigators the driver had the right of way and stayed at the scene after the accident.

The Orleans Parish Coroner will officially identify the victim and determine cause of death in this incident upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.
