October 13, 2021

The City of Victoria, in partnership with the Greater Victoria Public Library, is seeking nominations for next year's Youth Poet Laureate. Applications will be accepted until November 8, 2021.

Applicants for the Youth Poet Laureate position must be 14 to 24 years of age and reside in the Capital Region, including the Gulf Islands. Candidates must demonstrate an involvement in the poetry community, have clear and innovative ideas for the vision of their role as Youth Poet Laureate, and be skillful in presenting their work to the public.

"Poetry is a great medium for youth to relay artistic expression," said Mayor Lisa Helps. "The Youth Poet Laureate will have the opportunity to showcase their craft and push the boundaries of creativity."

The Youth Poet Laureate will be given a $1,750 honorarium, $2,000 of project funding, and the option to engage in a mentorship with the City of Victoria's Poet Laureate during the year. The term for the Youth Poet Laureate is from January to December 2022.

Created in 2013 by the Victoria Youth Council, the Youth Poet Laureate position provides the community access to strong youth voices. The Youth Poet Laureate will reach out to vulnerable youth populations, develop a community youth poetry event and encourage peer-to-peer education through new works. The City of Victoria and the Greater Victoria Public Library fund both the Poet Laureate and Youth Poet Laureate positions.
