Today we are announcing end of availability for Metasploit Community Edition effective immediately. I'd like to take a moment to provide some context for this decision and to reinforce our commitment to the open source and Metasploit community.
When Rapid7 first released Metasploit Community in 2011, it was one of the only ways to get Metasploit (including Metasploit Framework) in a pre-packaged installer. Today, Metasploit is available in a number of popular packages, from security-oriented Linux distributions like Kali Linux and Parrot OS to Rapid7's own open-source Metasploit Framework 'omnibus' installer, which builds nightly and supports Linux, Windows, and macOS. With the number of pre-packaged installers available today, we see less of a need for the Community Edition.
Existing Metasploit Community licenses will remain valid until they expire at the end of their one-year term.
We will communicate this end-of-distribution to Metasploit Community users on a rolling basis over the next 12 months as their licenses approach expiration. Bi-weekly updates to Metasploit Community will continue to be available to existing users for as long as their licenses remain valid.
Our support of and commitment to Metasploit Framework, its community, and related open-source projects remains as strong today as it ever has been.
Thanks to the Metasploit users and contributors who have worked with us the past decade and a half to make Metasploit the world's foremost tool for penetration testing and offensive security research.
