Dallas ISD News: William Mitchell named assistant athletic director for Dallas ISD

NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release: Oct. 4, 2022

DALLAS - William Mitchell has been named Dallas ISD's newest assistant athletic director by Silvia Salinas, the district's executive director of athletics.

Mitchell joins the department from South Oak Cliff High School, where he served as head track & field coach and AVID coordinator and was integral in football team operations during the 2021 state championship. He will be the athletic department's administrator for baseball, golf, tennis, and team tennis and will oversee and manage travel advances and reimbursement processes for all athletics programs.

"I am thrilled to be joining the Dallas ISD athletics staff," Mitchell said. "It is good to know that the work I have done over the years has not gone unnoticed. I can't wait to hit the ground running and continue helping coaches in the district, as others did for me."

Mitchell graduated from Skyline High School in 1998 and began his teaching and coaching career at his high school alma mater in 2002. He took on the role of assistant track & field coach, then later became the assistant football coach and took the lead on operations in 2004 until leaving for South Oak Cliff in 2021.

From 2008-18, Mitchell coached the girls' track & field team, leading the Raiders to state championships in 2004, 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2010. He also led the team to the state runner-up finish in 2003 and 2007. The Dallas Morning News named Mitchell the Girls' Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2010, the same year he earned Coach of the Year honors from the National High School Track Federation. In 2011, he was the Texas UIL Girls' Track & Field Coach of the Year.

Mitchell solely coached the girls' track & field team at Skyline until 2018 and then began coaching the boys' track & field team until his departure. He is a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association and the Texas Girls' Coaches Association.

A two-sport athlete at Skyline in football and track & field, Mitchell earned a track & field scholarship to the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education in 2002. He added a Master of Education in Administration from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 2015.

His new role with Dallas ISD Athletics will begin on Oct. 5.
