Holiday weekend is part of a busy summer calendar

Del Mar's busiest weekend of the year begins tomorrow with families enjoying the City's beaches and big crowds expected for the Fourth of July fireworks display during the final day of the 2022 San Diego County Fair.

For the holiday weekend, the City is employing additional Sheriff's Deputies and peak staffing of Lifeguards, Parking Enforcement Officers and Beach and Community Patrol Officers. Plans include the staffing of an extra fire engine and staged ambulance. Other enhancements include additional portable restrooms and increased cleanings of all restrooms and trash receptacles.

Street closures and parking modifications are planned to accommodate the Del Mar Foundation's Fourth of July Parade, which begins at 9 a.m. Monday at Powerhouse Park.

After two previous summers of events were canceled or curtailed by the pandemic, the high season of 2022 has included a heavily-attended summer fair and the return of Del Mar Foundation Twilight Concerts at Powerhouse Park, the Del Mar Junior Lifeguard Program. Also on the calendar are the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club's race meet and the Surf Cup soccer tournament at the Surf Sports Park east of Del Mar.

Summer preparations and increased demands for service touch upon all City departments.

Community Services is at peak staffing for lifeguards and parking enforcement, with lifeguard service running from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and parking enforcement extended until 11:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturday through Labor Day. The Powerhouse Community Center has fully reopened for special events.

Public Works is kept busy with cleaning, repairs and running water and wastewater systems. To prepare for peak wastewater flows during the summer, the Department cleans and maintains the 21st Street Pump Station.
