The main stage of the joint strategic exercise Zapad-2021 will be held at the Mulino training ground in the Nizhny Novgorod region

On September 13, 2021, a drawing of practical actions of troops (forces) of the main stage of the joint strategic exercise of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus Zapad-2021 will take place at the Mulino training ground in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

During the main stage, the military formations of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, in cooperation with the military contingents of the armed forces of Armenia, Belarus, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia, will work out joint actions to repel the offensive, conduct maneuverable defense, deliver a concentrated fire strike and defeat the 'enemy'group that has wedged in.

The combat training missions will be based on the experience of military operations in the Syrian Arab Republic and the forms of use and methods of action of formations, military units and subunits tested during combat training activities, taking into account the tactics of actions of units of the armed forces of foreign states.

At the first stage, the coalition group of troops will work out the issues of conducting combat operations for holding the main defensive line, drawing the first echelons of the offensive group of the mock enemy into the operational bag, repelling air attacks, landing tactical airborne troops and using a mobile strike reserve.

At the second stage, in order to disrupt the command and control system of troops and weapons, gain fire superiority and reduce the combat potential of a mock enemy, a coalition group of troops will deliver a concentrated fire strike to the entire depth of the operational formation of its troops using reconnaissance, shock and fire complexes.

During the third stage, the coalition grouping of troops will carry out the defeat of the enemy's wedged group with the landing of operational-tactical and tactical air landings, the actions of units in the bypassing detachment, blocking and capturing settlements. Within the framework of the stage, it is planned to widely use the airborne assault and parachute units of the Airborne Troops, as well as to work out the issues of ammunition supply, evacuation of wounded and damaged equipment from the battlefield by logistics and technical support units.

The joint strategic exercise (JSE) of the armed forces of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus takes place every two years in accordance with the decision taken by the heads of the two states.

The Zapad-2021 exercise is the final stage of joint training of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation this year.

Practical actions of the troops (forces) will take place in the period from 10 to 16 September 2021 at nine training grounds located on the territory of the Russian Federation, in the Baltic Sea, as well as at five training grounds of the armed forces of the Republic of Belarus.

In total, up to 200 thousand personnel, about 80 aircraft and helicopters, up to 760 units of military equipment, including 290 tanks, 240 guns, multiple rocket launchers and mortars, as well as up to 15 ships take part in the JSE Zapad-2021 on the territory of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus.

The maximum number of personnel involved in the exercise of military units subject to the Vienna Document of 2011 in the territory of the Russian Federation will not exceed 6,400 military personnel.

The return of the military authorities and troops to the points of permanent deployment after participating in the exercise is planned until mid-October of this year.
