Special service commemorates War Memorial move

The memorial made of granite was carefully moved by expert stonemasons from its previous location outside the former Civic Centre. Now closer to the community, it allows even more people to come together to pay their respects to our fallen heroes. It will continue to play a central role in the borough's annual remembrance service.

The moving rededication service was led by Reverend James Power, Vicar of Harrow Borough Church. He was joined by the Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Ramji Chauhan; Deputy Lieutenant Simon Ovens; Leader of the Council, Cllr Paul Osborn; Harrow Interfaith, The Royal British Legion and other dignitaries.

During the ceremony the last post was played followed by two minutes' silence. Wreaths were also laid to honour those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

The history behind the war memorial is linked to Cllr Janet Mote, wife to late husband Chris Mote who campaigned for such a monument in Harrow.

Cllr Janet Mote said:

"I am delighted that the war memorial has a new home here in the town centre.

"This war memorial is close to my heart. Both Chris and I were passionate about having this memorial to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. And I am sure he will be proud that this monument still stands.

"Many families in Harrow will have links to the first and second world war. It may be their parent, grandparent or great grandparent who took part. Now in the centre of Harrow, I hope it encourages people to learn about the war and ensures children and future generations never forget our fallen heroes.

"I want to thank everyone who was involved in the careful moving of the war memorial and look forward to November's Remembrance service."

Also in attendance were standard bearers from Stanmore AJEX, the Royal British Legion (RBL), and the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) who stood in solidarity, honoring our fallen heroes.

The Mayor of Harrow, Cllr Ramji Chauhan said:

"I am honoured to be part of this special event. The sacrifices that are made by the brave men and women in our armed forces must not be forgotten as they give up so much to protect our freedoms.

"I am pleased the war memorial is now in the heart of the community, where people can pay tribute to those lost in conflict. I look forward to future Remembrance services in the town centre."
