House Committee Advances $19M in Yarmuth Transportation Funding Requests for Louisville Roads, Smart Signals, ‘Reimagine 9th Street’ Plan

WASHINGTON - Today, the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee advanced H.R. 3684, the Investing in a New Vision for the Environment and Surface Transportation (INVEST) in America Act, a transformational $547 billion surface transportation reauthorization bill that included more than $19 million in funding for Louisville projects requested and secured by Congressman John Yarmuth (KY-03).

The legislation contains more than $343 billion in funding for roads, bridges, and safety; $109 billion in funding for transit projects; and more than $95 billion in funding for passenger and freight rail.

'Federal investments in our infrastructure and in safer and more-connected neighborhoods are key to bringing our nation into the 21st century,' said Yarmuth. 'I'm proud to have secured initial approval for four projects in Louisville that will help provide equitable access to transportation, improve safety while reducing carbon emissions and congestion, and help bridge the '9th Street Divide.' The INVEST in America Act is a transformational bill that will make historic investments in infrastructure needs across our city, our Commonwealth, and our country. I look forward to supporting it when it is considered by the full House.'

The INVEST in America Act offers a new approach to federal transportation policy by emphasizing fixing our existing roads and bridges while making record investments in passenger rail, public transit, cycling and walking infrastructure, and zero-emission options, while creating safer, more connected communities. The legislation also contains strong Buy America provisions and labor protections, allowing the work created to be fueled by American workers, manufacturing, and ingenuity, with targeted investments in rural and underserved communities.

All four of Yarmuth's project requests were funded at the full amount requested. The project names, locations, and funding levels approved for Yarmuth's Member-Designated Project requests are below:

Project Name/Location: Traffic Calming Measures for Shelby Park and Smoketown Neighborhoods
Jefferson County, KY
Requested Amount: $2,400,000
Description: To convert one-way streets back to their original two-way directions and include pedestrian features and bump-outs for transit buses.

Project Name/Location: Reimagine 9^th Street
Louisville, KY 40202, 40203, 40210
Requested Amount: $5,000,000
Description: Currently a physical barrier and psychological symbol of segregation between West Louisville and the rest of the community, this project would redesign 9^th Street from Kentucky Street to the Riverfront, creating a corridor that helps unify our community and create a more equitable city. A Reimagined 9^th Street would create an attractive, vibrant, and safe connection between West Louisville and downtown for all users.

Project Name/Location: I-65 Southbound Ramp to Brook Street
Louisville, KY 40202
Requested Amount: $9,600,000
Description: To realign the I-65 Southbound ramp at Jefferson Street and Brook Street-one of the highest crash intersections-to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians, ease access for visitors, and facilitate the future conversion of Jefferson Street to two-way traffic from end to end.

Project Name/Location: Smart Signals Corridors
Louisville, KY 40204, 40205, 40218, 40291
Requested Amount: $2,900,000
Description: To continue to expand smart technology communication with more than 1,000 signals throughout Louisville to reduce crashes, prioritize signal timing, and reduce travel time and overall delay.

The legislation will now head to the House floor for a vote.
