McConnell Secures Over $1 Million in Transitional Housing Funding for Kentuckians in Addiction Recovery

Press Releases

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced today the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will allocate $1,044,020 to Kentucky for the Recovery Housing Program established under Senator McConnell's Comprehensive Addiction Recovery through Effective Employment and Reentry (CAREER) Act.

Senator McConnell's CAREER Act, designed to address the devastating impact of substance abuse on America's workforce, helps connect individuals recovering from substance abuse with career services and stable housing opportunities. The funding announced today will help provide temporary housing for individuals in addiction recovery until they can arrange a more permanent living situation.

Tragically, overdose deaths have increased in Kentucky and around the country over the past two years. The CAREER Act includes provisions written by Senator McConnell to steer federal funds to states like Kentucky with high rates of substance abuse and overdoses. HUD will allocate the funding announced today to the state of Kentucky, which will then select specific funding recipients.

"Substance abuse rates have increased dramatically in Kentucky over the past two years and have had severe adverse effects on our workforce. I wrote the CAREER Act to mitigate the impact of addiction on both individuals in recovery and the larger economy, and am proud this bill continues to help Kentuckians successfully reenter society. Stable housing plays a key role in individuals' long-term recovery, so the funding announced today will help us break the cycle of addiction and turn the tide on the substance abuse epidemic," said Senator McConnell.

To date, Senator McConnell has secured more than $350 million to combat substance abuse in Kentucky.
