Refuge Expansions Affirm President’s Commitment to Sustaining Wildlife, Americans’ Outdoor Heritage

WASHINGTON, D.C. - President Joe Biden's expansion of four wildlife refuges affirms his commitment to conserving and recovering America's irreplaceable wildlife, restoring essential habitat, and sustaining the country's outdoor heritage. The expansions of the Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge in North Carolina and the Aransas and Big Boggy National Wildlife Refuges in Texas, and the Muleshoe National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico and Texas - to be accomplished through voluntary easement or sale agreements with landowners - brings the Biden Administration's expansion of refuges during his time in office to more than 6 million acres.

"National wildlife refuges provide some of the country's best hunting, fishing, and outdoor-recreation experiences while also setting aside the habitat species need to thrive for future generations. The Biden Administration's commitment to these often unsung and under appreciated gems has been steadfast," said Mike Leahy, senior director of wildlife, hunting and fishing policy at the National Wildlife Federation. We're grateful for the Biden Administration's support for national wildlife refuges and the people and wildlife that depend on them."

"We look forward to working with the president, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the public to ensure that these newly expanded refuges are managed in ways that enhance their value for people, wildlife, and our way of life."
