Council approves plan to explore fundraising options for a performing arts theater and the development of a community and engagement program

The City Council on Tuesday approved a plan to explore the fundraising feasibility of a potential performing arts theater as well as the development of a community and engagement program with neighboring cities, among other business.

As an additional part of the Performing Arts Theater Feasibility Study that was discussed at the March 26 Council Meeting, the City Council approved the issuance of a Request for Proposals to explore the fundraising feasibility to support a potential performing arts center.

Council members also unanimously approved the development of a community outreach and engagement program in partnership with Laguna Hills and Rancho Santa Margarita. Homeless outreach services are currently provided by Mercy House, which informed the City that the organization will no longer provide those services to the area as of June 30.

In addition, the Council approved an amendment to continue services for the City's Senior Mobility Program, which provides an economical "curb-to-curb" taxi service to Mission Viejo riders. The program operates through Measure M2 funding and because of the program's popularity, it doesn't cost the City.

Speaking of Measure M2 funding, the City applied for and received grants to fund the Marguerite Parkway Corridor Traffic Signal Synchronization and Olympiad/Felipe Road Corridor Traffic Signal Synchronization projects. City staff spoke about how difficult these grants can be to obtain and manage; however, the projects will improve traffic congestion and flow and add needed infrastructure.

During the presentation portion of the meeting, the Council declared April as Community College Awareness Month and presented a proclamation to South Orange County Community College District Board of Trustees President Timothy Jemal.

The City Council normally meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. Meetings are streamed live on the City's website and air on Cox Channel 30 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 99.
