On 13 May, Secretary of State Piotr Wawrzyk met with the representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Poland Marin Din Kajdomcaj.

The talks focused on Poland's cooperation with UNHCR in the face of refugee crisis caused by Russian aggression against Ukraine. Deputy Minister Wawrzyk appreciated UNHCR's actions to support war refugees who arrive in Poland. He also underlined Poland's contribution in helping the three million refugees seeking shelter in our country, as well as Poland's commitment to mitigate the current crisis in the long run. In this context, he referred to the International Donors' Conference organised in Warsaw on 5 May 2022, when the international community managed to raise USD 6.5 bn USD to support Ukraine. The officials also discussed UNHCR's Regional Action Plan in response to the refugee crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.

Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Geneva has been operating since 1951. UNHCR cooperates internationally to ensure that the refugees' rights are protected and their problems solved. In 1991, Poland became party to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol. Under the Convention, the High Representative set up his office in Warsaw the following year.
