Ear-to-ear smiles, warm embraces, and loud applause were plentiful during the first round of commencement ceremonies for the University of San Diego Class of 2022 on May 21 and 22 at Torero Stadium.

The School of Law held its 65th Annual commencement ceremony on May 21. The event featured a passionate rendition of the National Anthem by Alyssa Nicole Alarab '22, a student address by Martha J.S. Nelson '22, and remarks from School of Law Dean Robert A. Schapiro, JD.

"We are very proud of this class, which has faced many challenges over the past three years," Schapiro said. "Remember, you are a part of a long heritage that is rooted in the Middle Ages."

Alumna Margaret A. Dalton '94, JD; and Vice Dean and Professor of Law Corina Thorsnes presented the 2021-22 Thorsnes prizes. The Thorsnes Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship was awarded to Warren Distinguished Professor of Law Roy Brooks, JD; and the Thorsnes Prize for Excellence in Teaching was awarded to Professor of Legal Writing Gail Greene, JD.

United States Circuit Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit M. Margaret McKeown, JD, gave the keynote address.

"As a judge, one of the very few times I can make everyone happy is today in a commencement address," McKeown said with a smile. "Congratulations, think big and go for it."

The first portion of the 63rd Graduate Commencement Ceremony was held on May 22 and featured graduates from both the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) and the Division of Professional and Continuing Education (PCE). On a cool and overcast Sunday morning, graduates walked proudly down the center aisle on the field at Torero Stadium, looking up into the gathering crowd to wave enthusiastically at loved ones.

The event featured a greeting from USD President James T. Harris III, DEd, who acknowledged the sacrifices everyone has made during the past couple of years.

"Whatever the situation, I have no doubt that your attitude played a role in your success today," Harris said. "As those with graduate degrees, you have an obligation to step up when the world asks you to take on leadership opportunities. Congratulations to the Class of 2022. Say 'yes' to the world."
