Sydney airport passenger traffic slumps to new low

Passenger traffic at Australia's busiest airport of Sydney dropped to its lowest level in August since Covid-19-induced air travel restrictions started in March 2020. The latest decline is a result of a lockdown in Sydney, the state capital of new South Wales (NSW), at the end of June following an outbreak of the Delta variant of the coronavirus.

The number of passengers that used Sydney airport dropped to 51,000 in August, half of the previous month's passenger volume of 102,000 and below the previous low of 93,000 in both April and May 2020, operator Sydney Airport said.

International and domestic passenger traffic remains affected by NSW's stay-at-home orders and continued border restrictions for both domestic and international travel, Sydney Airport said. Passenger traffic in August was also affected by the suspension of quarantine-free travel with New Zealand after Wellington paused its travel bubble with Australia in late July.

Domestic passenger volume fell to 25,000, the first time it has fallen below 30,000 since the air travel restrictions began.
