Ohio EPA Meeting About Hamilton County Asphalt Plant Permit

Ohio EPA is considering an application from Valley Asphalt for an air permit that would allow the company to replace an existing hot mix asphalt plant with a plant of identical production capacity in Hamilton County.

A virtual public meeting about the draft permit will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, 2021. It will begin with Ohio EPA and the Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency giving a short presentation on the application and answering questions from the public. A hearing will immediately follow, during which the public may submit written comments on the record about the application. Citizens who want to participate must register in advance of the meeting.

Valley Asphalt is proposing to replace its existing hot mix asphalt plant located at 7940 Main St., Newtown. If approved, the draft permit, known as an air permit-to-install-and-operate (PTIO), would regulate emissions of particulates, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, and carbon monoxide.

Ohio EPA currently is accepting public comments about the draft permit until 5 p.m. on April 26. Written comments can be submitted during the virtual hearing or emailed to Michael Kramer at [email protected].

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1972 to consolidate efforts to protect and improve air quality, water quality and waste management in Ohio. Since then, air pollutants dropped by as much as 90 percent; large rivers meeting standards improved from 21 percent to 89 percent; and hundreds of polluting, open dumps were replaced with engineered landfills and an increased emphasis on waste reduction and recycling.
