Men’s Rugby wins Pagoda 7’s Tournament

READING, Pa.
- The Kutztown University Men's Rugby team won the Pagoda 7's Tournament on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Reading. The Pagoda 7's is a local rugby tournament hosted by the Reading Rugby Club. The tournament consists of local men's clubs and college sides. This year's tournament teams were, the Reading Rugby Club, Bloomsburg Alumni, Old Gaelic, Blackthorn, Millersville, Wilmington, Hempfield Alumni, Penn State Berks, Albright and Kutztown. This Kutztown tournament team was quite unique in that the Golden Bear coaching staff elected to send a young side. The thought process being the experience these young men could gain for the upcoming spring semester. The side that traveled to the tournament, consisted of eight freshmen and four sophomores. They were; , Gus Dellinger, , , , , Sal Manera, , , , and . This would be the first time they had ever played together in a sevens tournament. However, they were up for the challenge. The Golden Bears swept through their pool undefeated. Kutztown was victorious over Albright 24-5, Old Gaelic 24-5, Penn State Berks 40-0 and the Bloomsburg Alumni 35-0. In the Semi-Finals, the Golden Bears once again defeated Albright 47-0. In the Cup Finals, Kutztown defeated Old Gaelic 22-14. On the day, this young Golden Bear's side scored a total of 192 points with 24 against. Kutztown dominated the opposition, with Thomas touching down seven times (35 pts.). That was followed by Bachman with five tries (25 pts.) and Tanner with four (20 pts.). Although O'Reilly didn't score a try on the day, he led all scorers with 21/31 conversions and 42 points. The future is certainly bright on the developmental side of the ledger. Kutztown will combine their experienced players with these young stalwarts and the competition level within the club's framework, will catapult the Golden Bear's to National Collegiate Sevens prominence in 2020.
