THIRD PHASE OF THE DOMINICA CHINA FRIENDSHIP HOSPITAL OFFICIALLY HANDED OVER

Phase three of the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital was officially handed over by representatives of the People's Republic of China on January 11, 2021.

This as the Government of Dominica remains committed to improving health care services for all. Financed by the People's Republic of China, the new Dominica-China Friendship Hospital is evidence of Government full filling that mandate.

Construction works on the national hospital is progressing at a steady pace, with phase one already completed and in use by the general public.

'This completed phase encompasses the number two medical technology building. This is a two story building which houses an eight bed capacity Intensive Care Unit, Blood Bank Unit on the first floor and the Operating Theater on the second floor. The Operating Theatre has four operating rooms and is fully equipped for tele-medicine, a medical service that is being fully embraced by the Ministry' stated the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and New Health Investment, Hon. Kent Edwards.

Also as part of phase three is a two story out patient building, which will allow for conducting all outpatient clinics in one strategic location. This structure is being used in the interim as a temporary accommodation for the male and female surgical wards as well as the male medical ward.

Works are currently ongoing on phase two of the hospital.

'Phase two comprises of a three story expert dormitory building which houses an ophthalmology unit on the ground floor and the staff dormitory on the second and third floors. The second and third floors were finished and have been in use since April 2020 serving its purpose well during the covid-19 pandemic. Staff members who have been caring for patients admitted for covid-19 at the Dominica-China Friendship Hospital have been housed in this facility, thus making it much safer for staff members and the public,' Honourable Edwards added.

Works on phase six has already begun. This major project is expected to be completed by the end of 2021 or in the first quarter of 2022.
