Paid Summer Environmental and Wildlife Positions

Beginning in May, the UAA's Applied Environmental Research Center (AERC) will be recruiting for motivated individuals who love to spend Alaska summer outdoors. The AERC will be recruiting for seasonal research participants to perform various field research projects ranging from a variety of forestry work to collecting data on specific environmental projects on Joint-Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER). Some of this work includes extensive data collection using sonar operated fish weir systems and high-definition cameras to conducting habitat analysis for maintaining healthy moose populations as well as controlling invasive species. The field season extends from May through November (may change based on specific project needs and may also be adjusted to help with student academic schedules). Compensation is $1,900 per month (participant stipend). Training for field season is required and the trainings start in May of 2024. Individuals will be paid for completing training requirements for the month of May.

Preference will be given to current students with field experience or education, but anyone with a love for the outdoors is welcome to apply. Must be willing and able to hike with a backpack through rough terrain, lift up to 50 lbs and endure inclement weather conditions in the outdoors for extended periods. Additionally, fieldwork activities also include weekends and holidays throughout the summer. Weekly work activities are estimated around 30 hours per week, but fluctuate depending on project demand.

Additional requirements: Participants must be a US citizen and complete a background search to access the military installation. Individuals must also attest to being fully vaccinated to COVID-19 for Department of Defense and U.S Army Corps of Engineers requirements because of the specific research, projects and activities being conducted on military installations (federal requirement).

Lastly, the AERC offers a research technician apprenticeship program through the US Dept. of Labor. Serving as a summer participant for one field season allows individuals to qualify for entering into this unique opportunity for a full-time position with the AERC at UAA if positions are available.
