CCSD Recognizes Middle School Writing Contest Winners

The Cherokee County School District congratulates the winners of its middle school writing contest!

Shelby Gibbs of Freedom Middle School won the seventh-grade division for her historical fiction children's book, "The Unseen Heroes of 9/11," and Hadley Duncan of Creekland Middle School won the eighth-grade division for her short story, "Cold Cost," in the 2022 Middle School Writing Contest organized by CCSD's Office of Curriculum & Instruction.

"Congratulations to Shelby and Hadley for earning our top middle school writing honor," Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. "Writing is a critically important skill for our students, and this contest offers them the opportunity to improve their technique and share their creativity. Thank you to their teachers for their outstanding instruction and to our curriculum team for organizing this competition."

The entries were written by students as part of the seventh-grade children's book and eighth-grade sci-fi/dystopian rigorous curriculum design (RCD) units taught in all middle school English Language Arts classes. The contest was designed to showcase the excellent instruction by writing teachers and the outstanding student writing taking place in CCSD schools.

Shelby's "stunning illustrations and realistic narrative" impressed the judges. Her seventh-grade English teacher was Ansleigh Carroll.

The judges praised Hadley's "distinctive style, developed plot and descriptive details." Her eighth-grade English teacher was Madison Truckner.
