Helsinki is a pioneer in intelligent transport – come and hear about the City’s intelligent transport experiments

03.12.2021 10:00

The City of Helsinki develops the city's development and experimentation platform activities by providing environments where different actors can experiment with their services and products in a genuine urban environment. The experimental activities offer huge benefits to the city, companies and other actors. Experiments for intelligent transport have been centralised in the Jätkäsaari district, and experimental environments are offered especially through the Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab.

Helsinki is known as a pioneer in intelligent transport with open data and interfaces, new services and automation. There are also many high technology experts in Helsinki and a functional and enabling environment for testing and implementing new solutions. New services and technologies are developed and piloted in cooperation with the city, companies, research bodies and city residents.

Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab is organising a seminar and networking event on Friday, 10 December 2021 at 13:00-16:00. The event will be held remotely via Teams. Come and hear what Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab has been up to in the past few years.

There will be presentations on companies' intelligent transport experiments and experiences, and information on what is to come after this year. Find out more about the program here. You can register for the event from this link.

"Since 2019, Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab has carried out a large number of versatile intelligent transport experiments. These have been carried out on the basis of pilot applications defined based on the needs of the operators in the region and the ideas of companies. The pilot platform has also been a good way to support and implement EU project pilots and involve residents in development and testing activities,"says Juho Kostiainen, Project Manager at Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab.

Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab supports testing of new intelligent traffic innovations

The goal of Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab is to support and promote the testing of intelligent transport and new innovations. Another objective is to support the scaling up of experiments and enable companies to do business, thereby providing better services for residents and other users. Another important objective is to promote solutions for traffic flow, safety and air quality.

In the field of intelligent transport and mobility, the aim of the solutions is to meet traffic challenges. For example, consumer services have been developed and tested in Jätkäsaari, ranging from cargo bikes to delivery robots and drone transport, technologies from smart crosswalk signs installed in the street to traffic radars producing open data, and traffic situational awareness and control services for the city's traffic management and the Port of Helsinki.

Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab is a project coordinated by the City of Helsinki's Economic Development Division. Forum Virium Helsinki is the coordinating partner of the project, which is funded by the Helsinki Innovation Fund. In addition, the Jätkäsaari Mobility Lab includes a number of companies, research bodies and several urban actors, such as the Port of Helsinki, HSL, HKL, Helsinki Business Hub, Metropolia, VTT, Aalto University and the FCAI network, both directly and through cooperation and other project entities.

More information about the city's other development and experimentation platforms can be found at testbed.helsinki. In addition, the http://www.jatkakokeilee.fi website (in Finnish) serves as a visible channel for residents and other users. The channel engages people and introduces experiments aimed at users.
