URBANDALE, Iowa - Iowa State tennis moved to 5-0 at home tonight following their victory over William & Mary. Led by the bright freshman class, the Cyclones (5-2) took down the Tribe (3-2) by a final score of 5-2.
and cruised by their Tribe opponents for a 6-1 victory that started the match on the right foot. Following a tough loss by the pairing in the No. 3 slot, the doubles point was to be decided by and , the No. 51 ranked duo in the nation. In a back-and-forth match, the Cyclone freshmen lost a heartbreaker to Mila Saric and Vitoria Okuyama, 7-6 (6) to give the Tribe the doubles point.
Despite entering singles down 1-0 and all Cyclones facing early deficits in their individual matchups, Iowa State refused to go down easily. The result of this match rested heavily upon Iowa State's first-year athletes, and they did not shy away from the moment.
earned Iowa State's first point of the day, beating Raffaela Alhach, 6-4, 6-1. Fellow freshmen Chang and Hsieh each beat their opponents in straight sets to deliver Iowa State's first lead of the day, 3-2, with the top two slots yet to be decided in third sets.
In the decisive third sets, the top two Cyclones were able to take care of business to seal the victory. Naklo was the first of the two to finish, beating last season's Colonial Athletic Association's Rookie of the Year, Saric, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to seal the Cyclone win.
Although the team event had already been decided by that point, Cancini finished her match and her opponent. The Cyclone senior defeated Rosie Cheng, the 2018 CAA Player of the Year, by the final score of 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The Cyclones return to action early Sunday morning, facing Georgia State at 9:30 a.m. in Urbandale.
