Students present research during statewide science meeting

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - A large contingent from Shepherd University's College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Nursing traveled to Glenville State University to present their research at the West Virginia Academy of Science annual meeting on April 6. Fourteen students and seven faculty members participated in the annual event and one student won fourth place for best research poster.

Cameron Vu, a computer information sciences major from Frederick, Maryland, and her co-authors took fourth place for a poster titled "Smart Parking Space Detection with Generative Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models." Co-authors are Daria Panova, computer information sciences major from Elkins, West Virginia; Josiah Kowalski, a computer information sciences major from Berkeley Springs, West Virginia; Dr. Weidong Liao, professor of computer information sciences; and Dr. Osman Guzide, department chair and professor of computer information sciences.

Other student researchers who participated are chemistry majors Liliana Adamo, LaPlata, Maryland, and Raven Phares, Linn, West Virginia; biology majors Ronaida Ammari, Inwood, West Virginia, Abby Collins, Charleston, West Virginia, Mikhaela Ferguson, Martinsburg, West Virginia, Jessica Kellison, Renick, West Virginia, and Erika Voges, Gerrardstown, West Virginia; computer information sciences major Cara Burgan, Hagerstown, Maryland; mathematics majors Raina Burton, Davis, West Virginia, and Johnna Smith, Buckhannon, West Virginia; environmental studies major Marissa Mohn, Hagerstown, Maryland; and secondary education and biology major Lizzie Rea, Eldersburg, Maryland.

Faculty participants included Dr. Court Campany, assistant professor of biology; Dr. Jacquelyn Cole, department co-chair and associate professor of chemistry; Dr. Weidong Liao, professor of computer information sciences; Dr. Sytil Murphy, department co-chair and associate professor of physics; Dr. Laura Robertson, associate professor of biology; Dr. Conor Sipe, assistant professor of biology; and Dr. Qing Wang, professor of mathematics.
