Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day!

Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day With Us! Vote for the City of Frederick's Signature Bird!

As the community gears up to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day on May 11th, 2024, the City of Frederick invites its residents to participate by voting for our very own signature bird! Residents are encouraged to participate in the online voting process, which will take place from March 26, 2024, to May 4, 2024. The selected bird will not only serve as a symbol of our City but also help raise awareness about the importance of preserving habitats and promoting bird-friendly practices.

The City of Frederick is excited to involve its residents in selecting a signature bird that will represent our community's commitment to bird conservation and environmental stewardship. To cast your vote for The City of Frederick's signature bird, simply visit Frederickmd.gov/Birds and choose from the list of nominated bird species. Every vote counts, be sure to encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to participate as well!

The community's selected bird will be unveiled at Baker Park at our First Annual World Migratory Bird Day Festival, to raise awareness about the importance of migratory birds and their conservation. Festivities include a family bird walk led by Frederick Bird Club volunteers, and a showing of DreamWorks animated film Migration at the Baker Park Bandshell by City of Frederick Parks & Recreation. Additionally, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Friends of Waterford Park will co-host a volunteer event to identify and pull invasive weeds that threaten bird habitats at Waterford Park.

"We are thrilled to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day and engage our community in this exciting initiative," said Jenny Willoughby, Sustainability Manager of The City of Frederick. "By selecting a signature bird for our City, we hope to foster a deeper connection with nature and inspire greater efforts towards bird conservation."

World Migratory Bird Day serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting migratory bird species and their habitats. Through initiatives like the signature bird selection process, The City of Frederick aims to play a proactive role in preserving biodiversity and creating a more sustainable future for generations to come.
