TRANSITIONS: New Anheuser-Busch Professor

Glen Patrick Fox, a senior research fellow at University of Queensland, Australia, will become UC Davis' new Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting and Brewing Science on July 1. Fox succeeds Charlie Bamforth, who held the position from 1999 until his retirement last year.

'Dr. Fox brings a strong international research program focused on cereal chemistry, grain science and advanced analytical methods that he has applied to understanding the malting and brewing process,' said Linda J. Harris, chair of the Department of Food Science and Technology. 'We look forward to continuing our department's long-standing reputation for excellence in brewing science under his leadership.'

Fox will be an associate professor of brewing science in the food science department. As holder of the Anheuser-Busch professorship, he will teach undergraduate courses in malting and brewing science, as well as mentor graduate students and conduct research in areas relevant to the brewing industry. He also will be working with UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education to offer various programs in brewing science.

'I'm excited about working with the amazing staff at UC Davis,' Fox said. 'I'm also excited about being involved in the upcoming challenges and opportunities facing the malting and brewing sectors.'

Carolyn Thomas, vice provost of Undergraduate Education, announced the reappointment of three faculty members to her leadership team:

Annaliese Franz (associate professor, Department of Chemistry) as the faculty director of the Undergraduate Research Center, through June 30, 2021. In her first three years in the position, Franz has helped build new partnerships and raise the profile of the center in providing and supporting undergraduate research experiences across campus and across disciplines, Thomas said. Franz is an associate professor of chemistry.

Dave Furlow (professor, Department of Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior) as associate dean of Undergraduate Education and director of the University Honors Program, through June 30, 2021. His responsibilities include coordinating the First-Year Seminar Program and providing assistance in developing overall strategies for the unit, for increasing undergraduate student success, and for the continued improvement of undergraduate learning across all academic units and programs at UC Davis.

Matt Traxler (professor, Department of Psychology) as associate vice provost of academic planning, through June 30, 2022. He will continue working with campus leadership in several areas to support student success, including recruiting and planning; renovating existing classrooms and conceptualizing 21st-century learning environments; ensuring that program review produces concrete improvements in student experiences; overseeing Undergraduate Education's supplemental budget for course enhancement and expansion; and participating in campus collaborations to use data to improve student retention, persistence and performance. He directly supervises staff in UE's International and Academic English, Summer Sessions and the Washington Program, and provides support for Undergraduate Education's accreditation efforts.

Undergraduate Education Associate Dean Dave Furlow announced the appointment of Carla Fresquez to lead the development and support of an expanded array of Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences within First-Year Seminars, or FYS-CUREs for short.

'Carla brings a wealth of experience mentoring undergraduates, leading CUREs and related seminars, and supporting the placement of students in research programs,' Furlow said.

Fresquez has been working as a research associate in the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Center at California State University, Monterey Bay. She holds a bachelor's degree in environmental studies from Washington University, St. Louis, and a master's and doctorate in ecology and evolutionary biology from UC Santa Cruz.
