ICYMI: Rep. Frankel Warns of Six-Week Abortion Ban Taking Effect Wednesday, May 1st, Highlights Amendment on November Ballot

West Palm Beach, FL - Earlier today, Representative Lois Frankel (FL-22) hosted a press conference to discuss the widespread devastating impacts on reproductive health care of Florida's six-week abortion ban once it takes effect this Wednesday. She also called attention to the amendment on Florida's ballot this November that would enshrine the right to abortion care in Florida's constitution.

"Wednesday marks the start of a dark, life-threatening new chapter for women in Florida and across the South," said Rep. Frankel. "It's a near-total ban, as many women-probably most-don't know they're pregnant until after 6 weeks… Let us make it very clear today: Abortion is a medical decision, and politicians should not be interfering in a personal medical decision between Floridians and their doctors. Doctors, nurses, and other care providers should not have to risk criminal prosecution to treat a patient."

Following the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade, Florida had been serving as the last remaining option for women in the South seeking abortion care. The six-week ban effectively eliminates abortion access for the entire region, with patients seeking care now being forced to travel hundreds of miles to the nearest state without severe restrictions.

Last month, it was announced that Florida's November ballot will include an amendment that would overrule the ban and enshrine the right to abortion up until fetal viability (about 24 weeks) in Florida's constitution. It will require a 60 percent vote to pass.
