Bicentenary of independence of Republics of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua

These celebrations offer us the chance to remember and highlight our rich shared past, and to renew our commitment to the region, particularly in the current global context conditioned by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a priority for Spain to act through solidarity to be able to exit this health crisis together, and hence our country is donating millions of vaccine doses to Ibero-America and the Caribbean. The aim is not to leave anyone behind.

Spain reaffirms its interest in working together so that our respective people and societies can satisfy their legitimate aspirations to develop and advance, fostering political dialogue, social and economic development, the eradication of poverty and inequalities, and to strengthen the rule of law, good governance and democratic values.

On the 30th anniversary of the Central American Integration System (Spanish acronym: (SICA), we highlight its important active role for the region, due to its capacity to successfully tackle present and future challenges, which has always been able to count on Spain's support and always will be.

The bicentenary also coincides with the 35th anniversary of the Esquipulas processes, which led to the peace agreements that Spain accompanied and was involved in. We do not wish to ignore, in this context, the valuable lesson learned by Central American societies and governments, which should maintain and continue to consolidate the well-being of all their citizens.
