WASHINGTON, April 30, 2021 - This Saturday, May 1, the American Bar Association joins the nation to commemorate Law Day, the annual observance of the fundamental role that the rule of law plays in our society.

This year's Law Day theme, 'Advancing the Rule of Law Now,' is particularly significant considering the events of the past year. The rule of law means no one is above the law, and no one is beneath it - the law treats all equally, holding everyone accountable in the same way. It demands the enforcement of the law is clear and fair, the judiciary is independent, and fundamental human rights are guaranteed to all.

We have made progress as a nation in areas of equity but there is so much work still to do. The rule of law provides us with a framework to improve. Law Day is an opportunity for lawyers to educate the public on the work we do and the role we all play in creating a more just and equitable society.

The ABA is the largest voluntary association of lawyers in the world. As the national voice of the legal profession, the ABA works to improve the administration of justice, promotes programs that assist lawyers and judges in their work, accredits law schools, provides continuing legal education, and works to build public understanding around the world of the importance of the rule of law.
