City Council to Meet May 6, 2024

Las Cruces City Council will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, May 6, 2024, in Council Chambers at City Hall, 700 N. Main St.
City Council will consider a Resolution to appoint James DeRossit as Municipal Court Judge II. The Las Cruces City Charter authorizes the Las Cruces City Council, to "fill a vacancy by appointment of a municipal judge to serve until the next regular election." Judge Anthony Filosa currently presides over the Municipal Court as Municipal Court Judge I. DeRossit is an active attorney with the New Mexico State Bar Association.

Also, City Council will consider a budget adjustment to transfer $1,100,000 from the Telshor Fund for the Las Cruces Police Department Real Time Crime Center.

In the last five years, Las Cruces has witnessed a surge in criminal activities, with a 73% increase in violent crimes and a 71% spike in property crimes from 2018 to 2022. LCPD recognizes the urgent need for enhanced operational capabilities, especially in the realm of real-time intelligence.

LCPD has identified the need for the establishment of a real-time crime center as a solution to provide critical support to officers actively responding to calls for service, facilitate swift suspect identification, and foster real-time situational awareness. By harnessing advanced technology, integrating databases, and fostering seamless communication, the real-time crime center will address the immediate challenges faced by law enforcement and lay the foundation for a safer and more secure community.

The $1,100,000 budget request from the Telshor Fund includes $400,000 for building renovations for the intel and crime lab; $200,000 for construction, servers, and server cooling equipment; and $500,000 for equipment and installation.

The purpose of the Telshor Fund is to support the physical, mental, developmental, emotional and social well-being, safety, and housing needs of City of Las Cruces residents.
