Men's Health Month: Three Tips for Healthier Living

By Dr. Dennis Flynn, MD, Medical Director - Molina Healthcare of Ohio

June is Men's Health Month, a time to raise awareness about health challenges specifically affecting men's health and wellness. The following are ways men can better manage hypertension and decrease their risk of developing diabetes:

  • Monitor blood pressure. Men with high blood pressure are encouraged to lower it to about 120/80. Blood pressure can also be monitored at home, and men are encouraged to discuss target numbers with their doctors. If taking medication, men are encouraged to take it daily or as prescribed in addition to regular exercise, even a 30-minute brisk walk, and eat foods low in sodium and cholesterol.

  • Get adequate sleep. Not getting enough hours of nighttime rest can contribute to higher blood sugar levels. Getting adequate sleep nightly, seven to nine hours is recommended, should be a priority for all men who want to take charge of their health and wellness.

  • Manage diabetes. Men are encouraged to get their annual check-ups to know their numbers. Keeping blood sugar in a healthy range may require some modifications with diet and exercise, but is well worth it for a lifetime of health.
