Bismarck celebrates the launch of new fast electric vehicle charging stations

BISMARCK, N.D. - The City of Bismarck celebrated the launch and installation of two, publicly available, Level 3 fast electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at a ribbon cutting event held at the Bismarck-Mandan Convention and Visitor's Bureau. The charging stations became operational and are available for public use at the Bismarck Airport and the Bismarck-Mandan Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The new charging stations provide a faster and more convenient alternative to at-home charging. When combined with existing charging stations in the state, the addition of two, centrally located EV charging stations help to ensure that electric vehicle travel across North Dakota is possible. This presents new opportunities for local, regional and interstate electric vehicle travel and tourism.

'The installation of two, Level 3 electric vehicle fast charging stations is exciting because it makes access to charging stations more readily available for residents and visitors. This project marks a significant milestone in the development of effective and efficient connectivity in transportation while sustaining a healthy environment, said Mayor Steve Bakken. 'I'm delighted to see Bismarck leading the future in transportation with projects like these. Bismarck marks the spot to connect people, infrastructure and economic opportunity.'

The Bismarck Airport and Bismarck Mandan Convention and Visitors Bureau EV charging station locations provide ease of access for residents and persons visiting the community. The Airport location provides an additional amenity for airport travelers. The Convention and Visitors Bureau location provides quick access for I-94 and Highway 83 travelers while providing a gateway to area shops, restaurants and the Visitors Bureau.

In October 2019, the City of Bismarck applied for funding for the EV charging stations which was awarded by the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality in December 2019. The funding for these charging stations was made available from a settlement from Volkswagen's tampering of emission controls which caused their turbo charged direct injection diesel engines nitrogen oxide (NOx) output to not meet U.S. standards.

A Level 3 EV charger is considered a fast charger and allows for recharging times as low as 30 to 45 minutes. It operates on a 60-amp or higher breaker on a 480-volt or higher three-phase circuit with special grounding equipment.

The charging stations are owned by the City of Bismarck and are operated by the Bismarck Airport and Bismarck-Mandan Convention Visitors Bureau. The initial charging rates established at these stations is a $5.00 connection fee and $.25 per kWh used.

The fast charging stations are manufactured and supported by Chargepoint, Inc. To utilize this service, customers must download the Chargepoint app, which is the easiest way to find available stations, start charging and get updates when their vehicle is fully charged.
