HKY: Thomas Wins NECHA Colonial Conference Championship with 6-3 Victory Over Coast Guard

NASHUA, N.H. - The Thomas College ice hockey team defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy 6-3 to win the 2020 NECHA Colonial Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears were first on the board, going up 1-0 midway through the first period. Thomas answered with five to go in the first when the Justin Wentworth (China, Maine) roofed a backhanded shot to tie it 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

The Thomas offense came alive in the second period, with Ryan Kappelmann (Auburn, Maine) leading it off with a goal less than two minutes to put Thomas on top 2-1. Kappelmann scored another midway through the second to extend the lead to 3-1. Thomas added two more quick goals by Noah Poulin (Saco, Maine) and Cameron Bigelow (West Gardiner, Maine) to go ahead 5-1. Coast Guard got one back late in the second to make it a 5-2 score going into the final period.

Coast Guard earned an early goal in the third period and seemed poised to pull it within one, but Miloslav Fuksa (Czech Republic) concluded his fantastic tournament weekend by turning away each of the remaining shots he faced. Matthew Deveaux (Brunswick, Maine) sealed the victory with an empty net goal to give Thomas the 6-3 win.

The Terriers win the NECHA Colonial Conference Championship for the first time in program history, having joined the organization in 2014.
