Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is pushing to protect Georgia seniors from age discrimination in the workplace.

Today, a bipartisan bill backed by Sen. Ossoff that would prevent employers from using forced arbitration against older workers seeking justice and accountability in cases of age discrimination passed the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee.

The bipartisan Protecting Older Americans Act now heads to the full Senate for a vote.

"We've just advanced landmark legislation to ensure that older Americans who face age discrimination in the workplace can have their day in court," Sen. Ossoff said after the Committee advanced the legislation. "It is a great day for the Judiciary Committee, and I hope that the whole Senate will take up this measure as soon as possible."

According to a 2020 AARP survey, about 78% of older workers have either seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace-the highest level since AARP began tracking this statistic in 2003.

A New York Times report found that "more than 60 million American workers are subject to forced arbitration clauses in their employment contracts - often through fine print tucked into legal clauses of which the employees are unaware."
